Ayla has come all the way from Feira de Santana, a countryside city in Bahia, Brazil, to further her studies on international human rights law at the prestigious University of Liverpool. She received her Law degree at the State University of Feira de Santana. During her undergraduate studies she was selected to be a professor’s assistant in the International Law module, and also participated in a research group concerning international human rights, which led her to write an article and her undergrad dissertation on freedom of expression and hate speech in the decisions of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
After an exchange experience at the Faculty of Law at the University of Coimbra, where Ayla deepened her knowledge of international law and human rights, she realized that a lot, beyond the content of classes and seminars, can be learned from studying abroad and being in touch with people from all over the world, different cultures and perspectives. Because of her hunger for both kinds of knowledge, inside the rooms of the university and outside it, she applied for the LLM at Liverpool, as it is such a diverse and welcoming city. After receiving the University’s offer, the Hodgson Scholarship was absolutely fundamental for making it possible for Ayla to embrace the opportunity and cross the ocean towards her future.
